Alice came into the Nevada Welfare Office with clinical depression, a history of abuse and a seventh grade education. Soon she started counseling, anit-depressant medication and moved her family into subsidized housing. But she didn't stop there. She entered the Culinary Union for training and applied for (and got) Disibility Benefits for two of her three disabled children. In less than a year, she now has a certificate, a full-time job, and has stopped taking her medication and going to counseling. She is actively seeking a higher paying position. Tara with the help of Michigan assistance programs and her family and church climbs the ladder to growing independence and receives the "Achiever of the Month" Award from Michigan's Family Independence Agency. Once an unemployed child care worker, Tara is now emplyed full-time and will be pursuing a registered nurse degree part-time this Spring. Read the full story.
